The Most Terrible Thing Happened Yesterday...

Posted by Christine

It was in the morning. I’d had my shower and I was on my way through the dressing area in search of something loose and comfy to wear for my usual day of staring at a computer screen, arguing with imaginary people until blood pops out on my forehead….

And my wandering gaze just happened to fall on the dressing room scale. And yes, I know, you’re way ahead of me here.

I shouldn’t have done it. It was a stupid idea. Thoughtless. Wrong. But I did it anyway.

I weighed myself.

It was not a good moment. Seriously. Not.

I weighed myself and I let out a cry—one of abject misery. Of suffering. Of fury. Because. Hel-lo. It’s not even Thanksgiving yet. And being fat before the holidays even start…

So not my M.O.

But there you have it. I have extra pounds to shed. And I have a really scary feelin’ that it’s not happening. Not till after Thursday.

Or maybe not till after Christmas.

And then there are those totally wonderful New Years feasts a certain friend of mine is prone to offer. You know the ones. A table so beautifully decked out it brings a tear to the eye. Sparkling china, gleaming silver. Candles. Flowers. And the food…

Oh, the food. Lobster with drawn butter. Or maybe prime rib. Mounds of lovely, fluffy butter-and-heavy-cream laden potatoes. Fat, white rolls. With more butter.

Say it with me: Butter, butter, butter…

And then dessert.

Oh, I just can’t bear to describe dessert. It’s too painful. So I won’t.

And hey. I’m not even through Thanksgiving yet.

One thing I know, I’ll be eating the creamed onions. No matter what else I manage to deny myself, I won’t go that far. I love them. Nobody else does. But oh, I do. And I only make them once a year.

How ‘bout you? What is the one thing on your Thanksgiving table that you would never deny yourself, no matter how horrible the incident earlier with your bathroom scale?

And, whatever you do, don't forget to check out the American Title III hero and heroine descriptions and...vote for Kate!

Tough call, I am with the inlaws for Thanksgiving and they are not really good cooks - stove-top stuffing and all. So I guess it would be the pumpkin pie or pumpkin roll that I or one of the cousin's bring. Now, if I was home it would definately be the stuffing and gravy - yum, yum and maybe the cranberries. Even better, I love it all mixed up together with turkey - totally grosses out my hubby. Luckily when we go to my side for Christmas, Mom makes the whole turkey deal again. So I will get the chance to annoy him and satisfy me.

Chris, you're suffering from Scale Deception. Remember Susan's conspiracy theory on the appliances?

Well, scales do this too. On birthdays and holidays. It's hard wired into their tiny little digital brains!! Ignore this at all costs!!

And get down to the important stuff. Mashed potatoes and cake. Yes, an odd combo, but the two things I cannot do without come holiday time!

I don't even have a scale in my home - I wouldn't allow one.

AND Ms. Christine - every time I see you - you LOOK fantastic, and that's really all that matters.

Maureen. You think? But of course. I'm a victim of Scale Deception.

Thank you Miss Darling Jill. And you're right. Maybe the problem is not only Scale Deception, it's that I have a scale at all!

Cady, I love that too, the whole cranberries, stuffing, gravy, turkey all mixed up. I've heard the yarking noises from others. I don't listen, I just dig in!

Susan, yes. Cookies. After Thanksgiving it's the cookies that come after me, too. And the Sees candy. We only get that here during the holidays. There's a kiosk at the mall...

Stuffing and desserts!

Pat. Yes. Stuffing. Desserts. How can I choose?

I just won't, that's all. I'll take both!

Stuffing is my favorite! If no one's looking, I'll have it for breakfast Friday morning. My sister-in-law goes for pie, and she's the first person I ever saw who had dessert with her morning coffee. I was so impressed.

My stuffing is just the bread cubes and vegetables (onion, water chestnuts, celery). No turkey parts, or "gibbies" as we used to call them. No oysters or other yukky stuff. My grandma, now passed away (but whose china I have and we'll be eating off it on Thursday, so I always think of her on holidays a lot) used to make me my very own, non-contaminated serving of dressing, just like I make ALL the dressing now.

Christie, well, they do advise you don't ever add seafood to the dressing. Supposed to be an invite to e coli or some such.

Darn.

I'm late to the party but I brought wine! Which is what I absolutely refuse to give up on Thanksgiving because, hmm....have you met my family????

LOL...seriously, must we give up all the goodies on Thanksgiving? I refuse!

We can work it off the next day, right? Which reminds me....Chris, spare me your weight gain issues!! You always look fabulous!!!

Kate, you always say just the right thing!

And so true on the wine. I'm not skipping wine. And I won't even be around my relatives, since we dine at a friend's.

So...what have I decided?

I'm having a feast and worrying about Scale Horror later! Much later...

Christine,

I am so with you on all of that. My favorite thing is creamed onions too. Especially when mixed with sweet potatoes.

But my dh *just* told me that we have a business holiday party to go to...in two weeks!

I couldn't believe it. I'm so stuffed with love right now I know there's no way I'm fitting into any of my formals.

I have some a-line numbers to hide my can. I'm just hoping I can zip them up!

And re hiding the can. Now Dana, I know the can you're hiding just can't compare to the can I'm hiding....

I like the stuffing & gravy the most but any dessert is great too LOL This year there were only my in-laws with dh and I, we are now staying with the elderly in-laws and I guess will move in after the holidays. BIL just got home from hospital, SIL & BIL had just been here, all the children and grandchildren had other plans so I made a easy, simple ham dinner and MIL was the only who commented on the few of us! Clean up was so fast I loved it! LOL

I must say at the moment everything tastes great and it shows!
