Displacement Activities

posted by Maureen

Yes, this is what we call all those things we do instead of writing when we should be writing. Doesn’t it sound official?

Mostly, my favorite displacement activity is reading. ANYTHING, actually. I love to re-read my favorite books, which are legion. When I get a new book I’ve been waiting for, I just rush through it, inhaling every word. Then, I go back to the beginning, read it again and savor every word. Weird, probably. But I’m okay with that. J

Still, there are other things...just yesterday, Chris mentioned the mall. Always a favorite. But, you actually have to leave your house to do that. Which means, washing and blow drying your hair, applying makeup (trust me, this is necessary), and wearing actual shoes. None of which appeal to me on a daily basis.

So...watch QVC. Susan hooked me on this and it’s diabolical. It’s amazing how many things they have that I need. Things I’d never heard of before but now seem essential. And don’t even get me started on the Sterling Silver Days. Dangerous times for me. Why today alone, they had a quartz crystal heart necklace, a monogrammed front door mat and...are you ready? A set of 4 Decorative Odor Absorbing Gel Fragrances. Who can turn this stuff down?

Or, infomercials. Yes, I know what you’re thinking. But where else can you find a knife that not only slices tomatoes thin enough to read through (see above, reading) and also slice through cinder block??? I don’t know about you, but having a kitchen implement that can slice vegetables AND help me build a wall is just too good to pass up.

I like to lay out in the backyard and look up at the clouds, too. I’m a big cloud person. And trees. Love trees, too, just staring and watching the shifting shadows as the wind moves through the leaves. It’s a kind of hypnotism, I guess, but it sort of frees up the mind for creative thinking. (That’s what I tell my dh anyway).

Oh, and blogs. Yes, I read them as well as write them and sometimes, they give me MORE great ideas for displacement activities. Such as this one from Brava authors. Jamie Denton posted this site, but our own Kate Carlisle sent it to me. This fun link, will take you to this site where you can find out who you are as a Super Hero!! (Just call me Lightning Snake). Well, that was yesterday. Today, I’m Madame Dancer. I like the Snake better!

I read Jill Shalvis’s blog every day because her life is just too funny! (Sorry Jill, but you know it is!) And then I hit the rest of my friends’ blogs just to keep up and also to annoy them if there’s nothing new for me to read.

Because, if they don’t blog, that means I have to write! Is that fair?

So what do you do when you should be doing something else?

Okay, Maureen baby,
You just *had* to post that superhero name site, now didn't ya?

Just call me Golden Flame...

LOL....Ah, Golden Flame...we two will stand against the forces of darkness!!!

My displacement activities...

I think I mentioned pulling weeds, right? This time of year, it's sweeping up the acorns. See, I waste my writing time in a useful way, now don't I? That's what I tell myself.

And shopping...did I mention shopping???

Yeah, the deleted post was mine. Trying again, but this time actually spelling things right.

I hope...

Oh, yeah. That's right. Standing against the forces of darkness with Maureen...

Now, there's a truly worthy displacement activity...

I am Light Fox and my costume is a bullet proof cowl. I will be spending my Displacement Activity Time designing my bullet proof cowl...

My favorite Displacement Activity is anything to do with chocolate chips. Which explains the chocolate chip muffins sitting on my counter right now. It also explains my thighs :-)

At 10:50 AM, Blogger Maureen Child said...

LOL, Jen...I'll be over later for some of those muffins. And hey, we can come up with a GREAT design for your cowl!

Chris, maybe your super power could be pitching Acorns!

At 10:51 AM, Blogger Kate Carlisle said...

I'm THUNDER RAVEN!! My special power? I'm invisible!! And yet, my super costume is a silk nightgown! Yeah baby! LOL

I wonder if Thunder Raven can kick Light Fox's butt and steal those chocolate muffins? I may need the help of my trusted sidekick, Hop-A-Long Cassie...

At 11:01 AM, Blogger Jennifer said...

Thunder Raven, bring it on! Light Fox now has hidden the muffins in a fox hole :-)

I love the Superhero link...thanks!

I am Storm Panther and while I'll take a pass on my costume (spandex shorts! Yeah right!) I do love my tragic flaw (addicted to love).

My favorite DA...well, I would have to say 1) reading--especially as Maureen said--rereading my favorites and 2) watching movies I’ve already seen a hundred times before.

My hubby doesn't get it..."you already know how it ends" he'll say (talking about the books and the movies) to which I reply...

"it’s not the ending...its the journey"

Profound, huh? ggg Well, the DH might not get it, but he understands. Our anniversary was yesterday and he got me Season 1 of JAG – talk about watching a show over and over and over again! He indulges my love for Lt Harmon Rabb!

But right now I would say my #1 DA is sleep…which I need a ton of since I was up until the wee hours of the morning polishing my ms that I sent out to an editor at 7 am! And now I'm at work struggling to stay awake!

But on any given weekend afternoon a few hours of daydreaming that leads gently into a nap is a wonderful DA!

At 11:20 AM, Blogger Maureen Child said...

Okay, Light Fox and Thunder Raven! What kind of example are you two setting for the other Super Heros?? And Light Fox...hand over the muffins and nobody gets hurt!

Christyne, your dh is a man of impeccable taste!! As are you, of course, oh mighty Storm Panther. Who DOESN'T like looking at Harmon Rabb?

I have so many DVD's of favorite tv shows and movies that I watch over and over again, it's ridiculous. One of my favorite movies though is AMERICAN DREAMER! If you haven't seen it you MUST get it!

BARBARELLA, Baby! LOL.
My special power: My Incredible Finger (!)
My tragic flaw: I'm addicted to squash (just disgusting if you ask me...yuck)
My favorite food: Cheetos

What a fun link!

Michele

Ah ha! Barbarella unmasked!!! No need to ask YOU what your costume is, eh?

And who can argue with Cheetos???

I'm Citronella and I am riding my space tricycle. :) Michelle, at least you got a good favorite food, mine was salad. Salad, whose favorite food is salad.

As for work distractions, well this blog is obviously one. The other I blame on Susan - computer jigsaws. I tried them on her site and loved them. Then I found a whole site with them - jigzone.com. Aggh, what a way to not start that next project.

Cady

Oooh. Cady! Thanks for the great tip for more DA!!

As for Citronella's fave food... I'm sure salad has some good points!

At 1:04 PM, Blogger Michele said...

Cady--The pages of your favorite books won't be neon orange because of your Cheetos-stained fingertips. That's a plus. :-)

Michele

At 1:20 PM, Blogger Kate Carlisle said...

LMAO about the Incredible Finger!! Michele, I so envy you your special finger! Which is stained orange, I see...

Storm Panther, congrats on getting that ms out!

I was Silver Flame and I liked it so much yesterday, I don't want to check again!!

I'm kinda hooked on reality shows for my displacement. Project Runway is my current fav. (Even as I type, there's a marathon on Bravo. Not that I've been watching!)

At 3:43 PM, Blogger Christie Ridgway said...

My name is Barbarella and my super power is the twisting finger!!

It also tells me that my fave food is cake, which really, truly could be, though today I looked at the big bag of walnuts I bought at Costco and thought...chocolate chip cookies. See, and there's Jennifer talking about chocolate chip muffins and it just seems like I must, must bake.

That's a very fun displacement activity for me. And reading! And reading blogs! You also reminded me that there's this cool silver (looking) ice tub I wanted to get from either QVC or HSN...so now I'm off to check out their web sites.

Thanks, Maureen!

At 3:54 PM, Blogger Maureen Child said...

Ah, we have another Barbarella! So exciting!! And she shops, too!!

Silver Flame, welcome! Oh you who first steered me to QVC!

Storm Panther, may the Super Hero gods guide your ms. to the exact right editor!!

And you with the magic finger! Don't spread that orange dust around in here. And if you're going to, I want some Cheetos!

At 3:57 PM, Blogger Michele said...

Hey, wait a minute Christie Ridgeway! We can't BOTH be Barbarella!! Me thinks an imposter is on the loose and what's up with the "twisting" finger? Is that better than an "incredible" finger? LOL!

Michele
(who is now having an superhero identity crisis)

At 5:42 PM, Blogger Kate Carlisle said...

Barbarella's true secret super power is the ability to clone herself into anyone she wants to be!

But it looks like she can't make up her mind between Cake or Cheetos. This could be her fatal flaw!

At 6:00 PM, Blogger Christyne Butler said...

Thanks for the good wishes everyone! "American Dreamer"...its sounded familiar but I had to go over to Imdb and check it out...now, I remember but its been years since I've seen it. Got to get that one!

Project Runway? Love it!! I am so hoping Laura Bennett wins...I could wear her stuff right now!

Okay - gotta see who is leaving Dancing With The Stars and then off to bed!

At 6:05 PM, Blogger Maureen Child said...

We will now be holding encounter sessions for those Super Heros who are feeling just a tad off center. (And you know who you are)

At 10:48 PM, Anonymous SunniBrook said...

I have a cool name, even though it sounds more like a guy name, STORM WOLF. Nuclear Force as a power might be kind of neat but what the heck is an "ice sling" weapon? And my costume is a silk helmet. Do I not get clothes?! Am I to run around with my sidekick Clarence saving the world from my nemesis Marvin the Assassin naked? I mean, where am I supposed to keep my ice sling? Or my can of Cheez Whiz? Eeww, ick.

As for my DA's... boring stuff like laundry, cleaning the kitchen, taking care of the daughters and husband, cooking, cleaning... boy I must be really messed up if I choose housework over writing. :(

At 7:23 AM, Blogger Christine Rimmer said...

Sunnibrook, major LOL! Issues of a superhero. Scary!

And the naked thing...what can we tell you? Perhaps a utility belt for the Cheez Whiz and ice sling.

At 9:51 AM, Anonymous Jill said...

What do I do to avoid writing? ANYTHING. Hell, I'll even clean the toilets. That's when you know it's bad.
